The Puppies Today team is dedicated to working against puppy scams. We work with local law enforcement agencies to advocate that puppies come from responsible breeders, shelters, and rescues. Puppy scams not only harm the victims. They harm legitimate businesses as well. We are collecting any information from the community regarding puppy scams. You can help us win this fight!
The first step to protecting yourself from any scam is to be an educated consumer. If something sounds too good to be true, then it most likely should be investigated before you invest your hard-earned money.
- Obtain your puppy at a legitimate seller, breeder, shelter, or rescue.
- Use Google to research the business and organization to ensure it is a real place.
- Check out the business or organization’s reviews on Google. Scams will not normally have Google Listings full of good reviews.
- Pay for your puppy with a credit card or other means which allows recourse if the situation turns out to be fraudulent.
- Ask for recent photos of the puppy with your name and date on a piece of paper in the photo. You could even ask to video chat with the puppy.
- Ask if you can come to see the puppy in person. A legitimate business or organization will always be willing to allow you to come and see the puppy.

There are many different types of puppy scams. Often users are lured by the promise of a cute puppy only to find they have been scammed a substantial amount of money. The best way to avoid being scammed is to be educated on the warning signs and what to look for.
- Free Puppy where you only cover the “transportation costs.”
- The scammer often has a very sad and traumatic story to attempt to manipulate the individual emotionally.
- Unable to provide more photos when asked.
- Asking for uncommon payment methods via Western Union, Pre-Paid Gift Cards, or Moneygram.
- Unwilling to meet in person or allow you to see the puppy first.
- Increases in scams and pressure during the holiday season.
